Our trip to Tulum went how every other trip we take goes – completely unplanned and spontaneous. We stayed in a lovely Airbnb in a more local area of Tulum called Valletta.
When traveling out of the country, I will nine times out of ten stay in an airbnb. To me, it gives you a completely different perspective to see what day-to-day life is actually like in that area. Its usually cheaper, there’s more space, and you get a full kitchen. The airbnb we booked exceeded all expectations. It was walkable to a local neighborhood full of restaurants and bars, and was located between the main city and the beach. We spent our days waking up early to the stunning morning light peaking through the curtains on the floor to ceiling windows, cooked yummy breakfasts, took a dip in the pool, and walked to the markets and shops. We will no doubt book the same spot in the hopefully sooner-than-later future.
You can’t go to Tulum without going to the main beach strip. We posted up all day at the hotel La Zebra that allowed you to eat lunch at their restaurant and then have access to their pool and beach area (If you go, make sure to get their guac and plantain chips – yum). We also made sure to block off a day to see the cenotes and oh were they magical. A must see if you ask me.
